They are rather similar

"Maybe you're right about you and I. You know we might not be all that different. I certainly don't belong with all them damn people. Boy I hate how all of those people walk around like they are perfect. Then here's me on the edge of a mental breakdown wanting nothing more than to forget about all of them. What would life be like for me if I lived in your time? Away from all the "virtue" and shame that is. Would I have had the ability to talk to people about my life with about being labeled a goddamned freak?"

Bud's final reply
"I have no idea whether you would be able to work out your issues in my time or not, but I know that being in a society where you can be emotional is pretty nice. I don't really understand why being different was so bad in the 1950's. When I was looking at how good everything was in Pleasantville I was not thinking about how everyone there was exactly the same. I wasn't thinking about how people didn't seem to have any real emotions.  I get why it's so hard for you in the 1950's. It was hard for me too."

Mostly David and a little Holden

"Now hold on just a minute, you think it's ok to be phony? How is it good to go about pretending to be all... something you're damn well not?"

"I don't think I was very clear before. I don't mean that it's good to not be yourself, but I do mean that a little conformity isn't all that bad. I think that I have a much easier time making friends with people when we have common interests and like to talk about the same kinds of things. And that's sort of a form of conformity right? I mean in general, after reading the Catcher in the Rye it's obvious that neither you nor me really fit in all that well where we're from. I mean you're over emotional and as non-conformist as it gets in 1950's society, and I'm a nerdy guy with an obsession over a TV show. "

Holden Thinking
Boy, he's probably right. I don't have much in common with the other people, but you know. I'm not going to be all phony just to conform.

"I am some nerdy kid who loves a certain TV program, but I still have friends and I get along well with my parents. When it comes to living in the 1950's though I couldn't do it. The people there seemed so unaware of the world around them and home life wasn't perfect. I mean Mother should not have been so hesitant to disobey Father when he was making her unhappy. Families had to worry about shame in the community and I really missed color in Pleasantville. But if I had remained conformed to the "virtuous" way of life in Pleasantville I would not have learned as much about living as I have now."

Note to Cowie- I'm struggling getting in character with Bud. He just isn't as defined as a person as Holden is so bear with me please -_-

Bud's Reply?

What do you think David (Bud)? -Interviewer

Well Holden I'm not against conformity. I guess you kind of need it to have friends and work in society, but I understand that there are some flaws. When I look around me I see things I don't like I might try and discuss it with someone I trust. It doesn't sound like you have anyone you trust, do you Holden? I don't like people being "sexy" all the the time either, but it's not really any of my business what happens with them. I don't think everyone around us is phony either. People like to fit in, and sometimes that requires people to be a little phony, but that's not a bad thing. It's natural to want to fit in. In Pleasantville people learned to accept change, but it doesn't sound as though you're ok with change. To me it sounds as though Holden here, associates change with phoniness. Anyway, we're here to talk about conformity right? No I really don't think conformity is all that bad. Haha sorry that was a bit jumbled. Now I-"

From Holden On Conformity

"So Holden, how do you feel about conformity?" -Interviewer

"I never tried one goddamned day in school, you know. Why would I? School bored the hell out me, I spent every damn day sitting in class learning nothing. Boy, it was depressing having to sit in a room full of the phoniest of the phonies. I couldn't stand it, all those kids bumming around all the damn day pretending to be the perfect student even if they had never done a goddamned piece of school work in their life. And then if them phonies weren't pretending to be the perfect student they were being all sexy and cool, even when they stunk and they knew it. Like Stradlater, that sonovabitch, I couldn't stand it if I was as phony as them. I've always been different from them,  childish as I am and being a liar and all. Anyway, the girls are all exactly the same, except for old Jane Gallagher, they were all boring. I don't get why everyone wants to be the same, since being the same makes them so damn phony. Boy, adults are ever worse than people my own age. Like that Ivy League sonovabitch George Sally was talking before the Lunts. You know, most of the adults at that damn show were phony. When I get older I couldn't stand to hang around being like them idiots. I think that conforming makes people phony cause they aren't being their damn true selves."

Project Thesis

Thesis: Despite that Holden and Bud have many differences, they are also similar because both did not fit into the 1950's idea of conformity.

This Blog is one I made for English.

This blog will be a dialog between Bud from Pleasantville and Holden from Catcher in the Rye.
